The tone and style of I Digress is meant to capture the duality of superficial perfection and interior chaos.

Contrasting Styles

The lighting, color, and design will change based on whether the scene is capturing the instagram reality or digressing into the chaos of these characters’ actual lives.

Instagram Reality

In these scenes, the design is sophisticated, the wardrobe, hair and makeup is polished, the colors are vivid and saturated, and the shots are smooth. The scenes are written to show the characters trying their hardest to represent their “best self” and hiding important things in the process.

Digressive Reality

These scenes will be much more raw. The same location shown in the Instagram Reality (e.g. the bedroom) are completely transformed. Messy, harsh, discordant. The characters look more real, the shots are unsteady and there is minimal color added.

Pacing

Things move fast

Reflecting the modern tech world, this show will be extremely fast paced. The main characters are constantly be pulled in different directions and always feel a few steps behind. The constant “digressions” in the form of flashbacks and flashforwards will allow us to accelerate the narrative in different directions. And the integration of tech graphics - texts, instagrams, notifications - will cause different storylines to interrupt each other, creating that authentic feeling of unmanageable chaos, especially in the early seasons.

The Characters

Each character has a distinctive style, which is meant to represent and relate to different types of Millennials. Their look, ideology, interests and humor will be reflected in the show as well as across their social media profiles. However, they will be portrayed differently based on which version of themselves they are projecting - the persona or the true self.
